Installation Guide: SOLFILM
Before you begin—here’s what you’ll need:
Tools and accessories:
-
Installation solution (a mixture of water and a few drops of mild dish soap or a special solution)
-
Fine-mist spray bottle
-
Squeegees (e.g., ProWrap Betty, squeegees, and squeegees of varying hardness)
-
Installation scraper (razor blade scraper)
-
Water scraper / Rubber scraper
-
Knife with snap-off blade
-
Razor blades / replacement blades (for safe, scratch-free cutting)
-
Hot air gun or heat gun (e.g., Steinel)
-
Drying cloth / microfiber cloth
-
Towels to protect the interior
Step 1: Preparation and Safety
-
Park the car in a clean, dust-free, and windless area.
-
Make sure you have enough light (bright work lights are ideal).
-
Wash your hands and clean your work surfaces to reduce the risk of dust particles.
-
Protect the car’s interior with towels or plastic sheeting where water might drip.
Step 2: Cleaning the Windows
-
Spray a generous amount of installation fluid onto the glass surface—both the inside and outside of the window.
-
Use the window scraper and rubber squeegee to thoroughly remove dirt, dust, and old adhesive residue.
-
Wipe down the edges and seals with a microfiber cloth.
-
Be extra thorough in the rubber seals and around the window, where dust tends to accumulate.
-
Repeat as needed until the glass is completely clean and free of residue.
Step 3: Pre-cutting and Adjusting the Film
-
Place the window tint with the protective plastic facing outward on the outside of the window.
-
Spray generously with solution to allow for adjustment of the film.
-
Roughly cut the film to the shape of the window, leaving a margin of about 1–2 cm all around.
-
Use a heat gun to shrink the film if necessary—especially on curved rear windows or side windows with a steep curve.
-
Keep the heat moving and use the squeegee to stretch the film so it lies flat against the glass.
-
-
Then cut the film exactly to the shape of the window, leaving a small margin at the edge (about 1–2 mm).
Step 4: Prepare the inside and remove the protective film
-
Clean the inside of the window again with installation fluid.
-
Spray generously on the inside—both the glass surface and the adhesive side of the window film when removing the protective film.
-
Carefully peel the protective film off the window tint—use tape at each corner if necessary.
-
Avoid touching the adhesive side with your hands to prevent leaving fingerprints.
Step 5: Applying the Film
-
With the film and the glass both damp, place the film against the inside of the window.
-
Adjust until the film is positioned correctly.
-
Start from the center and use the squeegee to remove the installation solution with gentle, sweeping motions.
-
Work from the center outward and downward, then upward, to avoid air bubbles.
-
Be careful around the edges and corners—these areas require extra pressure to ensure the film adheres properly.
-
Wipe away any excess water that is squeezed out from under the film.
Step 6: Post-heating and Setting
-
Use the heat gun carefully to warm the edges and the film where bubbles or creases tend to form.
-
At the same time, use the scraper to ensure the film lies flat.
-
Avoid overheating—the film may warp or shrink unevenly.
Step 7: Final Inspection and Cleaning
-
Inspect the window from different angles and under various lighting conditions.
-
Look for small air bubbles, creases, or surface contaminants.
-
Spray and wipe one last time with a microfiber cloth for a clear finish.
-
Leave the car indoors for at least 24 hours to allow the film to cure properly.
-
Do not open the windows during the first 24 hours after installation.
Tips and Recommendations
Always use fresh, clean tools—old scrapers and dirty rags can scratch the film.
Practice on a scrap piece of film before you start on the actual windows.
Use good lighting to spot any mistakes right away.
Always choose the right window film from Global Window Films based on your needs: darker tinting for more privacy, lighter tinting for a discreet look combined with heat reduction.
Installation Guide: WRAPPING VINYL
Before You Begin – Preparations and Tools
Tools needed:
-
Utility knife
-
Felt scrapers
-
WrapStick and similar tools (for details & corners)
-
Heating tools (heat gun and/or IR lamp)
-
Microfiber cloths and cleaning solution
-
Surface cleaner (isopropyl alcohol or surface cleaner)
-
Magnets, masking tape, and possibly cutting tape (Knifeless Tape)
Environment:
-
Dust-free, well-lit, and well-ventilated room
-
Room temperature (18–24 °C)
-
Avoid drafts and direct sunlight
Step 1: Thorough cleaning
-
Wash the car thoroughly (without wax or shampoo containing gloss enhancers).
-
Dry it thoroughly—including around rubber seals and door jambs.
-
Clean the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol or a surface cleaner to remove grease and dirt.
-
Pay extra attention to corners, edges, and around emblems.
Step 2: Planning & Measuring
-
Decide where the seams should go (preferably along natural lines).
-
Use magnets or tape to “hang” the vinyl on the car and visualize how the film will lie.
-
Measure and rough-cut the vinyl, leaving a margin.
Step 3: Pre-cutting and Positioning
-
Cut the vinyl into manageable sections (door, fender, hood, etc.).
-
Use Knifeless Tape if you want to create seams or design lines.
-
Make sure the surfaces are still clean before you begin.
Step 4: Application
-
Peel off the backing paper in sections—start at the top.
-
Carefully place the film on the surface, securing the center first.
-
Use a felt scraper to press out air from the center and outward, in even strokes.
-
Be careful around the edges—gently heat the area to make the vinyl more pliable.
Step 5: Shaping Around Details
-
Use heat to gently stretch the film over curves and recesses.
-
Smooth the film down around edges and into seams.
-
For deep recesses—apply extra heat and work slowly.
Step 6: Cutting and finishing
-
Cut away excess film with a sharp knife (hold the knife at an angle away from the paint).
-
Press all edges down firmly.
-
Check details such as door handles, rearview mirrors, and emblems.
Step 7: Post-heating
-
For cast vinyls, you must post-heat stretched areas to approximately 90 °C. Different brands require varying degrees of post-heating; refer to the product information or PDF from the respective manufacturer.
-
Always check the recommendations for the specific film you are using.
-
This “locks” the film in place so it doesn’t shrink back.
Step 8: Final Check and Cleaning
-
Wipe away any fingerprints and residue.
-
Let the car sit indoors for at least 12–24 hours before washing or exposure to rain.
-
Care Instructions: Wash gently, avoid degreasers, and do not apply wax to the edges.
Tips & Advice
-
Use several scrapers of varying hardness; various specialized tools for different steps are available in our online store.
-
Knifeless Tape is perfect for clean designs and lines and prevents the knife from coming into contact with the paint.
-
Work methodically, panel by panel.
